The Olympiapark München GmbH

The Olympic Park Munich is one of the most beautiful places for recreation and adventure in the Bavarian capital. More than 50 years after the 1972 Olympic Games, the Olympic Park is still the venue for sporting events, concerts and festivals, religious and ideological gatherings and much more.

In 2022, over 4.4 million visitors came to the site, which is managed and operated by Olympiapark München GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of the City of Munich. This makes the Olympic Park one of the largest event locations in Germany.

Relaunch of the software architecture, modern design and optimized orientation

At the beginning of 2023, the Olympiapark completely renewed its corporate identity and corporate design. The associated relaunch of the website and the adaptation of the CI and CDs for the website were realized by +Pluswerk. This project not only involved a visual transformation, but also a fundamental technological reorientation.

First, the website www.olympiapark.de was migrated to a Kubernetes environment, which offers a flexible and reliable hosting solution. In addition, a consolidated media center was created across multiple systems, including the connection to the external data provider YEXT, the transfer of all existing legacy data and the implementation of an enterprise search.

We then put the software architecture of Olympiapark München GmbH on a new footing. Pimcore serves as the central management instance for all data records from different systems and for all of the company's communication channels. We significantly simplified the content management itself by introducing a new component library.

Agile collaboration for maximum added value

The Scrum method was used for the collaboration with the Olympic Park, with the Olympic Park acting as product owner. The agility in the development and implementation phase significantly increased the added value for the customer. Constant communication enabled flexible adjustments and a close, trusting collaboration that satisfied all parties involved.

For the future development of the new software architecture, +Pluswerk created detailed documentation in Storybook to provide future developers with clear instructions on how to use the components and interfaces created. The implemented innovations form the basis for the realization of a holistic digital experience platform.

Use cases

Location-based map with multiple layers

The events in the Olympic Park attract several hundred thousand people every year. The approximately 290-hectare site offers visitors numerous attractions, but also requires a lot of orientation. This is greatly improved and simplified by the new map on the Olympic Park website.

The map is based on well-known map services such as Google or Apple Maps and offers various zoom levels with additional information on the individual locations. The implementation had to be independent of the major commercial map services in order to keep licensing costs low and ensure maximum customizability.

Our solution for the new event location map is based on a heavily customized OpenStreetMap. We defined a specific map section within Munich and then provided it with various information layers in the new corporate design. Depending on the zoom level selected by the user, various landmarks such as event locations and services are automatically grouped together or displayed individually.

Mobile use of the map with a smartphone on site is particularly practical. Once the user has agreed to the data protection release, the visitor's current location is displayed on the map. The mobile view makes it easy to scroll and click within the map section so that the user directly receives relevant information on selected destinations.

The new interactive online map is therefore a valuable addition to the Olympic Park and helps visitors to find their way around the site more easily and enjoy the events even more. Thanks to its open structure, OpenStreetMap enables comprehensive navigation with many additional services, which can also be expanded as required in the future.

Digital annual report

The new digital annual reports are an important part of the Olympic Park's new website . By digitizing the annual reports, the operating company is increasing the attractiveness and comprehensibility of its annual publications. This takes communication with the park's stakeholders to a new level.

A digital annual report offers many practical advantages: Its interactivity allows for a deeper insight depending on the reader's needs, content updates can be made quickly and cost-effectively and multimedia elements such as videos and animations can be easily integrated. It is also more environmentally friendly as less paper is used and it is easily accessible.

The Olympic Park report welcomes the visitor with a full-screen highlight video showing clips and snapshots from the past year's events. This is followed by several graphic menu elements that refer to sections such as "Events", "Tourism" or "Finance". Between the sections there are positive quotes from visitors, which serve as credible testimonials to underpin and reinforce the statements in the report.

The introductory section is followed by an editorial by the management and the management report by the Supervisory Board and the management. As a change from the rather dry figures, data and facts, various data visualizations are then used, for example on the annual open-air concerts, the annual tax result or the total number of visitors in the past year.

The digital annual report is an important competitive advantage for the Olympic Park. It increases transparency and communication quality through interactive and up-to-date content, which strengthens stakeholder trust. It also enables an appealing presentation of complex data and findings, giving the company an innovative and modern image.

Pimcore as the central software architecture

For the Olympic Park, the website relaunch was only part of the switch to a new software architecture. At the end of the overall changeover, all external systems will be integrated with headless Pimcore architecture as a central solution for data object and asset management and as a content management system.

Pimcore is both a professional and scalable PIM (Product Information Management) platform and a CMS. This makes Pimcore a "hybrid CMS" that perfectly combines two functions: a classic CMS for digital channels and a central hub for collecting, managing and editing synchronized product information.

In practice, the new architecture brings many advantages, initially for the Olympic Park's website. The site fulfills a variety of different functions and serves as a central information channel, image carrier, event planner, online store and content hub for marketing and communication.

For example, if an event is canceled, a single change in the event software at a central location will be enough to automatically update all digital channels such as the website and digital display boards. This will save a lot of effort and ensure consistent communication.

Overall, the Olympiapark's modernized software architecture offers numerous advantages that lead to an optimized user experience and increase efficiency in managing the website for the company. And thanks to the high modularity of the components used, future changes to the architecture can be implemented quickly and with very little effort.
