Federal Monuments Office Austria
The Federal Monuments Authority (BDA) is the central authority for the protection and preservation of cultural heritage in Austria. It preserves historical buildings, works of art and archaeological sites and makes their significance visible for future generations. The BDA thus makes a significant contribution to the country's cultural memory.
Every year, the BDA invites visitors to the "Day of the Monument", on which over 300 historical sites throughout Austria open their doors. The event attracts thousands of visitors every year and brings people closer to the history of their country. The newly designed, digital information portal from +Pluswerk offers a modern, interactive platform for this cultural event.

Nominated for TYPO3 Award 2025

Our TYPO3 platform for the "Day of the Monument Austria" was nominated for the TYPO3 Awards 2025 in the "Culture" category - proof of technological excellence and user orientation. Every year, the award recognizes outstanding TYPO3 projects in various categories that impress with their design, technology and community impact. Criteria such as performance, UX, content and accessibility are evaluated. This nomination confirms the role of our solution as a model project in the public sector.
Project overview and objectives
As part of the relaunch, the website for "Heritage Day" was completely redesigned and technically modernized. The relaunch created a central platform that offers visitors, citizens and program partners alike easy access and optimal user guidance.
The project aimed to strengthen the visibility of the Federal Monuments Office and improve the digital experience around the Day of the Monument. With TYPO3 v13, a scalable, barrier-free platform was created that presents content in a structured way and can also be expanded in the long term.
Implementation and highlights
The new platform is based on TYPO3, version 13, and has been specially designed for large event structures. It offers two separate frontends: one for program partners to manage their own monuments and one for visitors to explore and plan their individual program.
Program partners can register, create monument entries and upload images. A multi-stage approval process in the backend ensures the quality and correctness of all entries. This significantly reduces the workload of the Federal Monuments Office in organizing hundreds of events.
A special highlight is the interactive map with a powerful, integrated search function. Here, users can find monuments sorted by location, topic or access and can save and share favorites with others without cookies or login. The barrier-free implementation and green hosting underline the sustainable approach of the project.
For the editorial work, TYPO3 was extended with the Content Blocks extension. This allows content to be structured flexibly and maintained quickly. The intuitive backend enables the Federal Monuments Office to manage and continuously expand content independently, even without support.

Result
The relaunch of Monument Day 2025 has transformed the website into a modern, user-friendly information hub. Visitors can now easily find monuments, plan programs and share favorites. Program partners benefit from clear processes and an intuitive management system.
The Federal Monuments Office now has a sustainable TYPO3 solution that noticeably improves organization and communication. Thanks to accessibility, data protection and performance, the website is a flagship project in the public sector. And with the flexible architecture, future expansions, new features and long-term investment security are also possible without any problems.
Use cases
Administration and approval of programme partners
The new partner portal enables monument owners throughout Austria to register themselves, create their programs and upload images. Thanks to the role-based TYPO3 user system, each submission is clearly assigned and can be efficiently checked and managed.
A multi-stage approval process ensures quality and transparency. Employees of the Federal Monuments Office check the submitted content in the TYPO3 backend and release it after editorial control. This keeps the entire process transparent, secure and time-saving at the same time.
Interactive map and personal favourites
The interactive map of Austria clearly shows all participating monuments and tours at a glance. Visitors can call up details on the program, opening times and accessibility with a click. Thanks to filter functions and responsive design, the search is also convenient and intuitive to use on mobile devices. This makes exploring historical sites an intuitive experience.
With the favorites function, interested parties can create and share their own lists without having to use unpopular cookies or complicated registration. This allows personal routes to be planned and shared with friends. This increases the frequency of use, reduces support costs and strengthens the digital experience of Heritage Day in the long term.

Conclusion
The project impressively demonstrates how TYPO3, as a flexible enterprise CMS, can handle even complex cultural and event platforms. Thanks to its clear structure, barrier-free implementation and modern user experience, the solution creates a digital space that makes culture accessible and tangible.
The combination of technical precision and sustainable implementation has resulted in a platform that will strengthen the Day of the Monument in the long term. TYPO3 v13, ContentBlocks and green hosting ensure future viability, efficiency and digital excellence - for a platform that is sustainable in the long term.
